Test Running the NEW iWalk Cornwall Mystery Walking Tour

in Porthleven.

Picture this

Three intrepid ramblers of varying fitness levels, a sunny Cornish morning, the scent of sea air and an app promising a ‘mystery walk’ of Porthleven.

The walk in Porthleven is in the final stages of production and we (myself Sue, Jacqui and May) were excited to try the walk out before it goes live in a month or two's time. We were closely followed by John and Linda in case of any hiccups, and let me tell you it was excellent.

So what's the deal?

Imagine an outside escape room crossed with a scenic tour of Cornwall, and that's The Mystery Walks by iWalk Cornwall. It’s part outdoor adventure, part puzzle-packed whodunnit, and 100% a great excuse to get outside with your partner-in-crime, friends, or your kids if you fancy giving them a taste of detective life without the trench coat.

Armed with just your mobile phone and a can-do attitude (seagull-proof snacks optional but encouraged), you’ll embark on a self-guided stroll through some of Cornwall’s most charming towns and villages (not just Porthleven, but Tintagel to St Ives and more to come). But this isn’t your average walk-in-the-park. Oh no. There’s a mystery afoot, and the only way to solve it is by cracking puzzles that unlock your next steps – literally.

At the start, you won’t have a clue where you’re going (much like life), but don’t panic – the app provides step-by-step directions, a live map, and a virtual sense of direction. As you go, you’ll uncover clues, admire some cracking views, and slowly piece together the story until, at the final stop, you solve the big mystery and achieve full detective glory.

The puzzles are crafted mainly for adults – think crosswords with a curious twist, logic brainteasers, and observational challenges – but kids can chip in too, especially when it comes to spotting things you somehow missed while staring at your phone. And don’t worry, if you get stuck, there’s a built-in hint ladder that gently nudges you from “I’ve got this!” to “I need all the help I can get.”

Each mystery takes around 2-4 hours, depending on how often you stop for cream teas, pasties, photo opportunities or seagull detours. It's not a race, take your time and make a day of it. Once the mystery is downloaded it works entirely offline using GPS. No signal? No problem - it's Cornwall proof!

WINTER WORKS AT LITTLE TREVOTHAN

WINTER WORKS FINISHED - ALMOST!

We don't seem to let things stand still at Little Trevothan Camping and Caravan Park,

and when our season ends on 31st December each year our Winter Works begin in earnest.

Over the years these have included:

Total renovation of our two toilet and shower blocks.

Installation of our log cabin featuring accessible facilities, family changing, indoor dishwashing and launderette.

Brand new adventure playground replacing some extremely old equipment on our playing field.

Tarmac roadways replacing grass and gravel around the park.

Hardstanding pitches for our touring field - the Great Coverack Flood in 2017 told us this was urgent work!

Development of an area for private holiday caravan ownership.

The replacement of all 16 of our holiday caravans, adding decking and skirting and interior luxuries.

Development of a Woodland Trail.

Totally new landscaping, new features and tree planting.

Installation of Free Wi-Fi across the park.

Well, this Winter hasn't been any different!

Our projects for the winter of 2024/2025 have been:

Installation of a Water Treatment Plant.

Re-sizing and re-laying our Seasonal Touring pitches.

Extending our electricity to Three Phase with National Grid.

We are now thrilled to be treating our own waste water as previously with six cesspits this was an extortionate drain on our income. Thanks to Gavin and his team at GH Surfacing for all his hard work this winter, and to Aqua Nero for project managing, this is now up and running and ready for the season ahead. Just some fencing to come to complete the project.

Some great fencing has been added to our touring field, something we have wanted to do for a while and the half-decent weather this winter has allowed us to do this. Thanks to our Dave and Colin.

We have also evened out the touring pitches on our field ensuring all guests and seasonal tourers now have the same space for setting up.

And one unfinished project, the introduction of Three Phase electricity supply to our park. Everything is in place on the park and we are just waiting for National Grid to carry out their work to connect us up. Hopefully not too much longer! Once this is complete we plan to make all our camping pitches available with electric hook up, and once we start replacing our holiday caravans again we will be able to go gas-free.

St Piran’s Day: Celebrating Cornwall’s Patron Saint

INTRODUCTION

St Piran’s Day, celebrated on the 5th of March, is a significant date for the people of Cornwall, England. St Piran is revered as the patron saint of Cornwall and tin miners, and his feast day is an opportunity for Cornish people to honour their heritage, culture, and the contributions of their forebears.

THE LEGEND OF ST PIRAN

St Piran is believed to have been a 5th-century Christian missionary from Ireland who brought the knowledge of Christianity and tin smelting to Cornwall. According to legend, he was cast into the sea by Irish pagans, tied to a millstone, and miraculously floated across the Celtic Sea to the Cornish coast. He landed at Perranporth, where he established a small chapel and began his ministry. The discovery of tin is attributed to St Piran. Legend has it that he lit a fire on his black hearthstone, which caused the tin embedded in the stone to melt and form a stream of white metal. There is lots to love about November:

November is the start of low season throughout Cornwall so beaches are quiet, wrap up warm and take your dog to blow some cobwebs away!

Find a cosy pub with a warm fire and you'll be sorted for a chilly evening with a home cooked meal. Perfect after a blustery day exploring the coast, villages or woodland.

Visit the Seal Sanctuary in Gweek - The sanctuary rescues many seal pups in November so a great time to enjoy the place when it is quieter.

Things to do during October in cornwall

October is that precious time before Christmas where you can appreciate some time away before the chaos starts!

Whilst Cornwall offers a safe haven away from it all all-year round, October is a wonderful time to visit with plenty of special events, quieter roads, cosy pub lunches and crisp autumn walks.

October encompasses Halloween, the spookiest time of the year with plenty of freaky events happening all over the Duchy.

Whilst we can't promise fabulous sunshine, we can guarantee you'll never be bored in beautiful Cornwall.

BEAUTIFUL PEACEFUL BEACHES

With seasonal dog bans lifted and buckets and spades put away after the summer you can appreciate Cornwall's beaches in their natural beauty. Embrace a walk across the beach and head to the local pub to refuel of a warming hot chocolate at a beachside cafe. Open-water swimming? The sea is (alledgedly!) the warmest at this time of the year.

An Inspector calls!

Amongst all the August holiday fun we welcomed James Hartley on a surprise AA inspection of our holiday park a couple of weeks ago.
Thrilled to say he was impressed and has sent through his report.

"A pleasure to return to Little Trevothan Camping and Caravan Park and my thanks for your time and assistance, which was much appreciated. There is so much to commend here, a lovely location with a very relaxed and peaceful atmosphere with easy access to the coast. Every aspect of the park highlights the conscientious approach here with a real sense of pride and care. Toilet and shower blocks in excellent shape with diligent maintenance and effective cleaning, very positive first impressions. A very useful range of options for guests here, great to see the popularity of the camping areas with trees providing natural shelter from the wind. The hardstandings are extremely useful here and no doubt much appreciated by guests. Hopefully the plans to introduce the water treatment will come to fruition. A range of useful additional facilities, including the impressive play facilities, games room, dog exercise area (dog wash coming soon) and the wonderful shop. Overall, strength in depth and a classification at Four Stars (Gold) is
retained with a Quality Score of 91%. All the best for the remainder of the year."

Summer isn't over yet and with the children going back to school, Cornwall is a fantastic destination for your quieter get-away.

September often has drier and warmer weather than August, and with the peak season over for another year, you can expect a calm and relaxing staycation!

Beaches and beauty spots will be much quieter and the roads will be less full making your journey much more pleasurable!

You can soak in the views and the scenery on inland and coastal walks, enjoy an ice cream on the beach or a cream tea in a lovely cafe.

The Cornish sea is allegedly warmer in September than other months, so if a jump in the waves or a swim is your thing, this could be the best time. Bringing your dog? Many of the beaches in Cornwall have dog bans lifted from 1st September allowing your canine friend to enjoy the freedom of the beach and sea as well!

So beat the crowds, enjoy the ambient temperatures, relax and unwind.

August is the busiest time for tourism, as it falls in the main school holiday of the year lasting around six weeks!

Ben Bowden & The Pards on Sunday 26th May from 7pm - This is a Cornish acoustic punk band forged from the granite of the surrounding area.

Go Go Skank will be performing on Thursday 30th May from 7pm - High Energy horn-fuelled dance band mashing up 80s classics as you've never heard them before.
